Iris J. Garthwaite

Ecologist + Dyer

I am a Scientist, Artist, and Writer. I am at home in the unknown and I live to discover new patterns and metaphors in the world around us. I view research as a radical act of listening, sometimes it is about measuring stream width, running a phytochemical extraction, clearing a leaf section, writing code to analyze data or simply observing the seasonality of events, the angles of sun, the network of veins running through a leaf. I am interested in ecological research that listens to the land rather than a simple extraction of data.

Natural dyeing is an extension of my passion for ecology and generating intimacy with the land around us.

I am currently an Environmental Science & Policy Master's Student at Northern Arizona University where I study Fremont Cottonwoods, Ecology, and Riparian Conservation.
